Definition
开辟 (kāi pì) means 'to open up' something previously blocked or undeveloped, like a new path, market, or frontier. It differs from 开创 (kāi chuàng 'to initiate, found'), which focuses on starting something new, and from 开拓 (kāi tuò 'to pioneer, expand'), which emphasizes broadening existing frontiers. 开垦 (kāi kěn) is specifically for clearing land for farming.
