当代 refers to 'the present age' or 'contemporary era', typically the current historical period (often mid-20th century onward). Unlike 现代 (broader 'modern times' starting ∼1900), 当代 emphasizes 'the present' and is common in art, history, and society. It is more specific than 时代 (a general 'era' or 'period').
