Definition
慈悲 is a Buddhist term for 'compassion' — the wish for all beings to be free from suffering. It combines 慈 (loving-kindness, giving joy) and 悲 (sympathy, removing suffering). In everyday Chinese it can also mean 'mercy' or 'benevolence', but the Buddhist root gives it a deeper, selfless quality you won't find in English synonyms like 'pity'.
