Definition
戏曲 (xìqǔ) is the general term for all traditional Chinese opera forms (over 300 regional styles like 京剧, 越剧). It differs from 戏 (xì), which is a broader word for any drama or play (including modern theater), and from 歌剧 (gējù), which refers to Western opera. 曲艺 (qǔyì) is a separate category of folk performing arts (e.g., cross-talk), not opera.
