Definition
戒酒 means 'to quit drinking alcohol' or 'to abstain from alcohol'. It is a separable verb (离合词): the verb 戒 and the object 酒 can split when adding aspect markers, duration, or frequency — e.g., 戒了酒 (quit drinking), 戒过酒 (have quit drinking before). You don't put measure words between the two parts; instead you say 戒了三次酒. The object of the action is built into the word, so you don't need a separate object.
