Definition
In modern Chinese, 打发 means 'to send someone away' or 'to kill time' — not 'to bestow'. The siblings 赏 (reward), 赐 (confer) and 赋予 (endow) all mean giving from a superior, but that is an archaic sense of 打发; you will almost never hear 打发 used that way today.
