Definition
承担 (chéng dān) is the most common, general verb for 'to undertake, to assume' responsibility, duty, cost, or a task. It is broader than 担当 (dān dāng), which is more formal and often used for taking on a specific role or heavy responsibility, and 担负 (dān fù), which emphasizes shouldering a burden or liability. For projects or contracts, use 承办 (chéng bàn) or 承包 (chéng bāo).
