Definition
指定 (zhǐdìng) means to appoint someone to a role or to specify a time/place/condition. It's more concrete and specific than 规定 (guīdìng 'stipulate a rule'), which sets a general regulation. Unlike 派 (pài 'send, dispatch'), which focuses on sending someone somewhere, 指定 emphasizes choosing or naming a particular person or detail.
