Definition
振 is a versatile verb with two main clusters of meaning. One is physical: to shake, vibrate, or flap (as in 振动 'vibrate' or 振翅 'flap wings'). The other is figurative: to brace up, stimulate, or activate (as in 振作 'pull oneself together' or 振奋 'inspire'). Be careful not to confuse 振 with 赈 (relieve famine) or 震 (earthquake/shock), which are different characters. Many of the raw dictionary glosses (relieve, terrify, abandon) are not standard for 振.
