Definition
授意 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to suggest or hint to someone to do something', often with the implication that the suggestion is indirect or behind the scenes. You can separate the two characters: 授 can take aspect markers or measure words, and 意 stays as the object. For example, 授过意 ('have hinted') or 授了意 ('hinted'). The person receiving the suggestion is introduced with 给 or 向: 给他授意 ('hint to him').
