控制 (kòngzhì) is the most general verb for 'to control'—used for emotions, equipment, people, or situations. 支配 (zhīpèi) implies having authority to direct people or allocate resources; 操控 (cāokòng) often carries a negative connotation of manipulating. For self-restraint, use 克制 (kèzhì).
