Definition
收养 (shōuyǎng) means to adopt a child or pet, or to take in and care for an elderly person. It is broader than 领养 (lǐngyǎng), which is specifically for children or pets and implies a formal adoption process. The other siblings (采取, 采用, 采纳, 通过) all mean 'adopt' in the sense of adopting ideas, methods, measures, or resolutions — never living beings.
