Definition
救人 is a separable verb-object compound (离合词): 救 is the verb 'to save/rescue' and 人 is the object 'person'. When you add a measure word, duration, or specific person, the two parts split — e.g. 救了一个人 ('saved a person'), 救过很多人 ('have saved many people'). You cannot put a direct object after 救人 because 人 is already the object; to specify what you're rescuing someone from, use 从...里救出 or 救...出... The pattern is similar to 帮忙, 见面.
