Definition
斋戒 refers to the religious practice of fasting and abstaining from certain foods (such as meat, wine) and sometimes other pleasures for a set period, primarily for spiritual purification. It is most commonly associated with Islam's Ramadan (斋月) but also appears in Buddhist and Taoist traditions. As a verb, it describes the act of observing such a fast.
