新剧 (xīn jù) refers to modern Chinese drama that emerged in the early 20th century, heavily influenced by Western theatrical forms, as opposed to traditional Chinese opera (戏曲). It is sometimes translated as 'Western-style drama' or 'modern spoken drama'.
