Definition
旭 (xù) is a literary bound morpheme meaning 'first rays of the morning sun'. It does not stand alone — you must attach it to 日 (sun) to form the word 旭日 xù rì (rising sun). You may also see it in 旭光 xù guāng (morning light) and 旭阳 xù yáng (morning sun), but 旭日 is the most common. Use it in formal or poetic contexts.
