晋级 (jìn jí) — to advance to a higher level, to be promoted (in rank or competition)

Definition

晋级 means to advance or be promoted in rank or competition, by passing through a level. 升/升级 is broader (rise, upgrade, escalate); 晋升 is the formal equivalent for job promotion only.
