暂停 means 'to pause or suspend' an ongoing activity, video, game, or meeting — it's a temporary stop with the intention to resume. It differs from 停顿 (tíng dùn, HSK7), which refers to a natural break or halt in speech or movement, and from 停业 (tíng yè, HSK7), which means a business stops operating. 暂停 is the everyday word for pressing pause or calling a time-out.
