案例 (àn lì) is a 'case' used for study or reference, often in professional or academic contexts. It is more specific than 例子 (lì zi 'example'), and broader than 案件 (àn jiàn) which is limited to legal/criminal cases. 个案 (gè àn) focuses on a single, individual case, whereas 案例 can be a representative case.
