Definition
民国 refers to the Republic of China, the sovereign state that governed mainland China from 1912 to 1949 after the fall of the Qing dynasty. It is commonly used to denote that historical period. Note that the Republic of China continues to exist in Taiwan, but in mainland Chinese discourse, 民国 typically refers to the pre-1949 era.
