Definition
沐 is a bound form (b.f.) — it cannot stand alone as a word in modern Chinese. Its original meaning is “to wash one’s hair”, but nowadays it only appears in literary or formal compounds and set phrases. The most common compound is 沐浴 (mùyù) “to take a bath” or “to bask in (a pleasant atmosphere)”. You also see it in 沐恩 (mù’ēn) “to receive favor” and in the chengyu 栉风沐雨 (zhìfēng mùyǔ) “brave wind and rain / work hard in the elements”. You should never use 沐 by itself in daily conversation — always use it as part of these fixed expressions.
