沦为 is a formal, literary verb meaning 'to be reduced to' or 'to degenerate into' a lower or worse state — typically a social status, condition, or role. It is always followed by a noun (often with negative connotations, such as 地痞, 阶下囚, 笑柄) and is used in written or serious spoken contexts to describe a decline or fall.
