洲 can refer to either a large continent (as in 亚洲 or 欧洲) or a small landform within a water body, such as a river islet, sandbar, shoal, or delta (as in 沙洲 or 三角洲). The context of size and geography determines which meaning applies. Be careful not to confuse it with 州 (state/province).
