淘汰 means to be eliminated or phased out, often through active selection (competition, job interview) or natural obsolescence (technology, species). It contrasts with 失传 (shī chuán), which specifically refers to cultural knowledge, skills, or traditions being lost or dying out—not to competitive elimination. 淘汰 is broader and more common in modern contexts of selection and phase-out.
