Definition
深刻 (shēnkè) describes thoughts, impressions, or understanding that are 'profound' or 'deep' in a figurative, intellectual sense. Unlike 深 (shēn), which can be physical (deep water) or figurative, 深刻 is only used for abstract depth. It is also broader than 深奥 (shēn'ào), which specifically means 'abstruse, hard to understand'.
