Definition
灭亡 means 'to perish' or 'to die out', used for civilizations, species, or regimes that cease to exist altogether. Unlike 消灭 (xiāomiè, focus on actively wiping out enemies/pests) or 毁灭 (huǐmiè, emphasises complete physical destruction), 灭亡 can be intransitive (perish) or transitive (exterminate). 灭绝 is more specific to biological extinction (e.g. species).
