Definition
炒股 (chǎo gǔ) is the everyday term for speculating in stocks — trading for short-term profit. Unlike 炒 (chǎo) on its own, which can refer to speculating in any asset (炒房, 炒鞋) and also means 'stir-fry', 炒股 specifically requires a stock object. 投机 (tóu jī) is a more formal, general verb for financial speculation in any market, not just stocks.
