父亲 (fù qīn) is the formal, written term for 'father', used in official contexts, introductions, or when speaking respectfully. In everyday conversation, Chinese speakers almost always use 爸爸 (bà ba) instead. 母亲 (mǔ qīn) is the corresponding formal term for 'mother'.
