Definition
田地 has two main senses: its literal meaning of 'field' or 'farmland' (the original sense), and an extended figurative meaning of 'a state, situation, or plight' — usually an undesirable situation, as in 落到这种田地 ('fall into such a state'). The figurative sense is common in spoken Chinese to describe how bad things have gotten.
