Definition
番 (fān) is a classifier for a whole round or period of an event (一番努力), for a kind or sort in set phrases (别有一番风味), and for times/fold only in 翻一番 (to double). For the 'times' sense, 倍 (bèi) is the general multiplier (三倍); 番 is limited to doubling. For 'kind', 种类 (zhǒnglèi) is a noun for categories; 番 is a classifier used with 一 in fixed expressions.
