疼 (téng) is the everyday word for physical pain or soreness, and also means 'to love dearly, to dote on' (especially of family). It's more colloquial than 痛 (tòng), which is used for both physical and emotional pain and in fixed phrases like 痛苦. 心疼 (xīn téng) is specifically 'to feel sorry for' or 'to grudge', while 疼爱 (téng ài) is a formal synonym for doting love.
