癌 (ái) is the shorter form used in compound names for specific cancers (e.g. 肺癌 'lung cancer', 胃癌 'stomach cancer'). 癌症 (ái zhèng) is the full noun for the disease in general. In everyday speech, 癌症 is more common when talking about the illness as a whole.
