空中 (kōng zhōng) refers to the sky or air as a space or location — 'in the air' or 'in the sky'. It differs from 天空 (tiān kōng), which is the sky as a whole expanse, and from 上空 (shàng kōng), which means 'overhead' or 'directly above'. 空中 can also be used as an adjective meaning 'aerial' or 'airborne' (e.g., 空中交通 'air traffic').
