Definition
签字 (qiān zì) is a separable verb meaning 'to sign one's name', especially on official documents. Unlike the verb 签 (qiān), which directly takes an object (签合同), 签字 splits (签了字) and does not take an object. Compared to 签名 (qiānmíng), which suggests an autograph or guestbook signature, 签字 leans toward formal/legal signing.
