纵深 (zòng shēn) refers to depth measured from front to rear, especially in military, geographical, or strategic contexts, and can also mean figurative depth (of theory, development) with an emphasis on thoroughness and progression over time. It differs from 深度 (shēn dù), which is the general word for physical depth (e.g., water depth) or profundity of thought, without the spatial front-to-rear orientation.
