纸币 (zhǐ bì) is the formal term for paper money or banknotes, as opposed to 硬币 (yìng bì) 'coins'. 货币 (huò bì) is the general word for currency (both paper and coin), while 钞票 (chāo piào) is a more colloquial synonym for paper money.
