继而 (jì ér) is a formal conjunction meaning 'then, afterwards, subsequently' — it links two events in a logical or temporal sequence, common in written Chinese. It is more formal than 接着 (jiē zhe, HSK4), which is used in speech and can also be a verb. Unlike 进而 (jìn ér, HSK6), which implies a further step or progression, 继而 simply indicates the next event in order.
