Definition
而 (ér) is a formal conjunction connecting parallel elements (often with a slight contrast, e.g., 'simple yet important'), indicating contrast ('but'), or linking cause to result in the pattern 因/因为…而… ('because of'). For 'and', it is more literary than 和/并且; for 'because', it cannot stand alone like 因为 — it must follow a cause word. It is less direct than 由于 and does not open a clause.
