Definition
胜任 (shèng rèn) is a verb meaning 'to be qualified for / competent at a specific job, position, or task' — it focuses on meeting the requirements of that particular role. It differs from 合格 (hé gé, adjective 'qualified, up to standard'), which describes meeting a general standard rather than a specific position. Unlike 擅长 (shàn cháng, 'to be good at a skill'), 胜任 is about being up to the demands of a role, not about having a particular talent.
