Definition
胜过 is a resultative verb compound (verb + complement 过) meaning 'to surpass' or 'to excel over'. It can be split with 得 or 不 to form the potential complement: 胜得过 ('can surpass') and 胜不过 ('cannot surpass'). The object of comparison usually follows the whole compound (胜过某人), or in the split form the 得/不 goes between 胜 and 过.
