自治区 is a specific administrative term for China's five provincial-level autonomous regions (e.g., Xinjiang, Tibet), each with self-governance for ethnic minorities. It is NOT a general geographic region like 西北 (northwest), which refers to a direction or the Northwest China area without political autonomy.
