苔 (tāi) is a bound form that only appears in the compound 舌苔 (shétāi), which refers to the coating on the tongue examined in traditional Chinese medicine. The nature, color, and thickness of this coating are used to help diagnose a person's health. It is never used alone as a standalone word.
