菩萨 is a Buddhist term for a being who has attained enlightenment but chooses to remain in the cycle of rebirth to help all sentient beings achieve liberation. In Chinese folk religion, it also refers to any deity or compassionate figure worshipped in temples, often associated with mercy and protection. The word carries strong cultural and religious connotations beyond the literal 'Bodhisattva' translation.
