Definition
董事 (dǒng shì) refers to a member of a board of directors, a corporate governance role responsible for high-level oversight. Unlike 经理 (jīng lǐ, operational manager) or 主任 (zhǔ rèn, department head), 董事 does not manage day-to-day operations. It also differs from 导演 (dǎo yǎn, film/theater director) and 指挥 (zhǐ huī, conductor/commander), which are artistic or command roles.
