Definition
虚荣 (xū róng) means 'vanity' or 'vain' — an excessive desire for admiration or status based on superficial things. Unlike 骄傲 (jiāo ào), which can be positive ('proud of achievements') or negative ('arrogant'), 虚荣 is always negative and focuses on craving others' approval. It is distinct from 虚伪 (xū wěi), which describes insincerity or hypocrisy in character.
