触目惊心 (chù mù jīng xīn) describes a scene so horrifying that the sight alone shocks you — it's always negative and visual. 骇人听闻 (hài rén tīng wén) is similar but for shocking news or stories you hear about, not what you see. 惊心动魄 (jīng xīn dòng pò) can be positive or negative and means 'heart-stopping' or 'breathtaking', not necessarily ghastly.
