Definition
让位 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to yield one's position' — literally stepping aside so someone else can take the seat or office. It's used for physical seats (让位给老人), for stepping down from a position (皇帝让位), and metaphorically for giving way to new trends or technologies (手机让位给智能手机). When you add a duration, frequency, or object, you insert it between 让 and 位: 让了位, 让过三次位.
