Definition
记账 is a verb meaning 'to keep accounts' or 'to charge to an account'. It is a separable verb (离合词): the object 账 can split off from the verb 记 when adding a complement, measure word, or aspect marker — for example, 记了账 ('recorded the accounts'), 记过几次账 ('recorded accounts a few times'), 记一笔账 ('record an entry'). The two main uses are: (1) general bookkeeping or tracking finances, and (2) recording a purchase on credit to be paid later.
