Definition
谅 is a bound form (b.f.), so it never stands alone—it always appears in compounds. It has two main meaning groups: (1) “forgive” or “understand” in words like 原谅 (yuánliàng, to forgive) and 谅解 (liàngjiě, to understand/forgive); (2) “suppose” or “presume” in literary/formal compounds such as 谅必 (liàngbì, presumably, I suppose). The second usage is less common in everyday speech.
