Definition
赔 (péi) means both 'compensate for damage or loss' and 'lose money in business'. It is more colloquial and general than the formal legal term 赔偿 (péicháng), and unlike 补偿 (bǔcháng) it implies a financial transaction. For purely business loss (not compensating others) use 亏本 (kuīběn).
